This tutorial will teach a user aspects of database administration using Oracle8 Personal Edition version 8.0.4 for Windows 95 or 98. Personal Oracle8 is intended for the desktop market. It is a scaled down version of Oracle8 Universal Server, which is a powerful database employed by many companies today. Personal Oracle8 offers most database administration functionality and is thus a useful learning product.

Typically Computer Science and Information Systems students are required to take a database systems class. However, there may not be time or opportunity to learn database administration within the degree program. The Personal Oracle8 tutorial will provide the individual hands on experience with the database on his or her personal computer without depending upon company training, a college class or a manual. The tutorial can also be integrated into the usual required database course as an advanced topic.

Personal Oracle8 is appropriate to database administrator instruction because its features are essentially the same as Oracle8 Universal Server. The main difference is Personal Oracle8 only allows one-user-at-a-time access, while Oracle8 Universal Server is intended for multiple simultaneous users. Therefore, the skills learned using Personal Oracle8 can be scaled up and transferred to a company environment where Oracle8 Universal Server is used. The goal of the tutorial is to offer the individual practice using database administration skills in a safe, isolated environment, where other networks and system performance are unaffected.

This tutorial builds on work completed by another student. The previously developed tutorial is web-based and focuses on Structured Query Language (SQL). SQL is the language used to interface with all databases, as well as an important language for a database administrator to utilize. Therefore, the Personal Oracle8 web-based tutorial will be an important contribution to a library of on-line database tutorials developed by students.
