Before you can create a database, you must first learn how to
start and shutdown the database, which are basic database administration skills.
Once you have created a database, you can start the database in a couple of
different ways.
To start the database from the Start menu:
Click on Start – Programs – Oracle8 for Windows 95 – Start Database
To start the database from the Oracle8 Navigator:
1. Open the Oracle8 Navigator using the following path:
click on Start – Programs – Oracle8 for Windows 95 – Oracle8 Navigator
2. Once you are in the Navigator, double click on the turquoise "Local Database"
icon
Either way you choose, you will see several screens that
display the sequential phases of the startup process. The screens will appear in
the following order:
- Starting Up database
- Checking Security
- Oracle8 Instance Started
- Database Mounted
- Oracle8 Database Started Successfully

An important habit to acquire is to shutdown the database before you shutdown
your PC.
You you can shutdown the database in a couple of
different ways.
To shutdown the database from the Start menu:
Click on Start – Programs – Oracle8 for Windows 95 – Shutdown Database.
To shutdown the database from the taskbar:
1. Right click on the turquoise database icon that is located on your
task bar.
2. Click the Oracle8 Shutdown option.
Either way you choose, you will see several screens that display
the sequential phases of the shutdown process. The screens will display
in the following order:
- Checking security…
- Shutting Down database…
- Database Closed
- Database Dismounted
- Oracle8 Database Is Shutdown
